After reading an article on slashdot about alternative energy in the USA to use shale mining and its comments, I thought of an idea rather interesting...
First off, the article: here basically talks about how the USA could do shale mining to produce enough energy to become independent from off shore oil while also using a cleaner source of energy. But then reading in the comments it talks about how it may be cleaner, but still not clean enough to not have global warming issues that would still arise.
In the comments someone mentions "We have also developed better battery technology, building technology for cars to make them lighter and stronger and companies like BP keep buying up the patents on them like on lithium polymer batteries." So I got to thinking that this is clearly obvious BP is doing this either to prevent new technologies to get released before they maximize their oil profits, and/or so they have the next big energy industry...
So my big idea is if these patents are out there, what is stopping a non-profit group of people from going and creating these technologies that all these energy companies are purchasing?? Why not gather a secret group online that works to recreate this and incorporate these technologies for their own uses, then share with family and friends. They could even sell kits of all the supplies needed with an article or tutorial on how to easily make this.
If there are technologies that are out there but not getting released because of greed by big corporations that is really hurting the people in the world by many means such as increase pollution, costs, etc then I feel like these companies are stealing from us!
The laws in this world are getting bought and paid for, not designed for the best interests of the people and this planet. This is what I keep seeing and believing to be true more and more, it is sickening!
2nd part / 2nd Idea
"The US government does not drill oil. They lease out the mineral rights to companies such as shell, BP and Exxon who extract the oil and then __sell it on the world market__. Let me say that again. The oil goes into a central market and could be shipped anywhere if the costs are right. Just because its produced here does not mean it stays here." The above quote is off the same page as linked to above. Basically pointing out that the oil is not US property, rather the rights to drill to the oil is sold(and at a substantially low price too!) So my huge idea is why not create a NOT-FOR-PROFIT company that would be drilling and not be giving insane bonuses and salaries to their CEOS. The not-for-profit oil company could then just sell inside the US at prices much lower than having to buy imported oil which would go directly back into the pockets of all the consumers, in turn giving a dramatic boost to the economy!!! I bet the majority of households easily spend $100+ per month on gasoline for their transportation, which for some less than middle class households can be a significant percentage of their income.
Of course doing such a thing would affect energy costs around the world and other countries would have larger supply so they too would see their prices at least drop some. For the big oil companies, of course their profits would go down for lossing the market of the USA. Also the big oil companies would not be able to basically "steal" the resources from the tax payers by purchasing the land to drill on at mere pennies compared to the resources they are taking out to resell back to the tax payers. =D
Of course government and the elected officials should have thought of this already I would think... unless they get bribed to make such a stupid decision or something!?!
